Mint Julep: how not to make it!

Mint Julep is undoubtedly one of the best cocktails if prepared correctly. Grounded in the Deep South, it combines fresh mint with bourbon whiskey and a twist of Angostura bitters. Unfortunately, as with all classic cocktail recipes, over the years it has morphed beyond recognition. Here's a hilarious video attempting to show how to make a Mint Julep that has been doing the rounds since 2006. Whatever you do, please don't learn this recipe!

Andrea from Brooks Nightclub and Sunset Lounge in Miami shows us how easy it is to turn a great cocktail into something else entirely. Listen carefully and watch as she shows how to make a Woodford Reserve Mint Julep.

We don't know if this concoction is endorsed by the brand, but we sure as hell hope not. Learning that a “Mint Julep is like a Mojito, but with bourbon” is one thing, but seeing her add lime cordial, canned 'sour mix' and Sprite was enough to put us off entirely.

If you really want to try this recipe, here's what you'll need:

  • 3 lime wedges
  • 1 teaspoon granulated white sugar
  • 3 sprigs of mint
  • Splash Rose’s Lime Juice
  • 2 parts ready-made Sour Mix
  • 2 parts Woodford Reserve Bourbon
  • Top up with Sprite
  • Garnish with a sprig of mint

For those of you that know a bit about bartending etiquette, you'll know using sour mix, wilted mint and letting the ingredients linger in melting ice in your shaker as you talk aren't generally recommended. We could continue, but we won't.

At least the recipe suggests using a 'hi-ball' or Collins, which is correct.

Mint Julep is a superb cocktail that deserves to be prepared correctly. We strongly recommend passing on Andrea's recipe and learning this recipe for Mint Julep instead.

  1. Awesome. An argument for limiting access to YouTube! Where to start? Ingredients all wrong. And I mean very wrong. God knows what this tastes like - love how she uses sour mix and Sprite, that's verging on the criminal. "Let's mix this bad boy up!" :-D And mint leaves don't look so fresh... Thank you for making my day 8-)
