Given its association with this popular cocktail, it is also known as an ‘Irish Coffee glass’ or ‘liqueur coffee glass’. Although it is shorter and usually features a capacity to brim of 7-10oz (20-25cl), it is often similar in appearance to a Sling, with an added handle. Before serving any hot cocktail, it is good practice to warm up the glass. Fill the Toddy with hot water and place a bar spoon in the glass. Once it is warm, empty the water and pour the cocktail in the Toddy, keeping the spoon inside. Only then should you take out the spoon, once the heat has had the opportunity to travel evenly throughout the glass. Although it is ubiquitous for serving hot cocktails, the Toddy is not essential if you are building your glassware collection. It can be replaced by any heat-resistant glass with a stem or handle.
