Coffee liqueur

Coffee liqueur

Coffee liqueurs are a high alcohol mix consisting primarily of sugar, spirit and coffee extract, popular for making B-52.

Coffee liqueur is heavier and often sweeter than eau de vie, fruit brandy or flavoured spirits, which do not contain sugar. This makes it a good ingredient to use for layering cocktails where the relative density of ingredients plays an important role.

Coffee liqueurs typically feature 20-35% alcohol content, although it is possible to find liqueurs ranging up to 70% alcohol by volume. This is usually achieved by adding a spirit such as vodka or cane spirit to the drink. In addition, coffee liqueurs often contain corn syrup and vanilla extract.

Coffee liqueur is used to make popular cocktails, including Mudslide and White Russian. It can also be used as a topping in deserts or mixed with milk, cream or hot coffee.
