Fresh mint

Fresh mint

Mint is mostly a perennial herb that typically refers to the genus Mentha, which includes about 25 species. It is one of the most common cocktail ingredients.

This includes peppermint, spearmint, apple mint and pennyroyal, as well as other mints that are found in temperate countries.

The most common types of mint are spearmint and peppermint, both of which are often used in food, confectionery, sweets and liqueurs (such as crème de menthe). They can be distinguished primarily due to the shape of their leaves, with peppermint leaves usually smoother than those of spearmint. Both varieties are easy to grow yourself either in your garden or in a pot.

You can experiment with different types of mints to find your favourite for each individual cocktail recipe, however there are generally no hard and fast rules. Some of the most popular cocktails that include mint are Mojito, Mint Cocktail and Mint Julep.
