Ginger ale

Ginger ale

Less strong in flavour than ginger beer, this non-alcoholic carbonated drink contains essence of ginger, colourings and sweeteners.

There are 2 main varieties of ginger ale: golden or dry. Golden ginger ale features a darker colour and a stronger flavour, and corresponds to the more traditional version of the drink.

Dry ginger ale appeared during the Prohibition era as it is easier to combine with spirits and alcohols for mixing cocktails due to its drier, lighter taste.

Nowerdays dry ginger ale has become much more common, with famous brands like Canada Dry, Schweppes and Seagram's dominating the market.

Ginger ale often also contains certain fruit flavourings, such as lemon, lime or even pineapple. It often contains sugar or honey as well and is an important ingredient for making Ginger Mojito, or as lighter substitute for ginger beer.
