Sugar syrup

Sugar syrup

A very useful ingredient for mixing cocktails, sugar syrup can be an alternative to honey and easy to make yourself.

In fact, knowing how to make good quality sugar syrup yourself is very useful, given it is used in so many cocktail recipes. It is surpringly simple to produce your own sugar syrup and once made, it can be kept in a refrigerator for up to 2 months.

How to make sugar syrup:

  • Make sure you have plenty of granulated sugar. For best results, use 2 cups of sugar for each cup of water;
  • Heat the water first in a saucepan, before adding the sugar bit by bit, stirring continuously while doing so;
  • Carry on stirring the ingredients in the saucepan until the sugar has dissolved completely in the water. Never allow the water to boil and stop simmering as soon as you notice the sugar has dissolved fully;
  • Let the syrup cool in the saucepan, before pouring it into a container (preferably a bottle for storage). When pouring the syrup, for best results fine strain the liquid using a tea strainer. This will ensure there are no undissolved sugar crystals in the syrup, as otherwise these could lead to more crystals appearing over time.
