About this Cocktail

Type: Hot Cocktails

Creamy, spicy custard and cognac drink that remains popular in America around Christmas and New Year.

With references to Eggnog dating back to 1825, it is one of the oldest cocktails around.

It can either be served hot or cold – we provide both recipes here. Either way, it is a sweet, custard indulgence – heavy enough to replace dinner!

Try experimenting by replacing the cognac with dark rum, or the similar Tom & Jerry cocktail.

Detailed Method

How to make hot Eggnog:

First pour all 5 ingredients into a heat resistant glass, using both the egg white and yolk. Stir thoroughly for a few seconds. Heat in the oven, or place in the microwave for about a minute. Stir the warm ingredients once again.

Alternatively, pour all ingredients into a pan over gentle heat. Mix continuously until the right consistency and temperature are achieved. Avoid boiling the ingredients.

Pour into a warm Toddy glass, then dust some freshly grated nutmeg on top of the drink to garnish.

How to make cold Eggnog:

Shake all 5 ingredients with ice for a few seconds.

Strain into a Collins glass filled with ice cubes.

Dust freshly grated nutmeg on top of the drink to garnish.
