About this Cocktail

Type: Tall Cocktails

A classic cocktail recipe that everyone should know. Originally from the USA’s Deep South, the Mint Julep cocktail is associated with the Kentucky Derby.

The Arabic word ‘julab’ means rosewater, however there is none to be found in this great cocktail. It was first referenced in writing as early as the 1780s and remains extremely popular today.

You can try lots of different variations on the classic Mint Julep recipe. Simply replace the bourbon by other types of whisky, rum, gin or even brandy or calvados.

How to Make it

Ingredients

10 leaves Mint

2 1/2 shots Whisky (Bourbon)

3/4 shot Sugar Syrup

3 dashes Angostura Bitters

Garnishes

1 sprig Mint

1 slice Lemon

Choice of Cocktail Glass

Detailed Method

If you like your cocktails minty, use a dozen fresh mint leaves in this recipe.

Make sure to discard the mint stems before you start, as they can add a bitter flavour to the cocktail otherwise. Likewise, take care not to crush the leaves to avoid releasing their inner juices. Gently bruising the leaves ensures they release their minty flavour as intended.

Muddle the mint leaves at the bottom of the shaker, before adding the other 3 ingredients. At this stage, to achieve best results place the shaker and its contents in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. This allows the mint flavours to blend fully with the other ingredients and ensures the Mint Julep is served ice cold.

Once it is properly chilled, shake the ingredients with ice cubes for a few seconds. Strain into a Collins glass half filled with crushed ice.

Stir (churn) the drink with the crushed ice using a bar spoon. Top up with more crushed ice and stir again. Repeat until the glass is full. At this stage, some recipes suggest floating half a shot of aged rum on top of the drink – however this is optional.

Add a sprig or mint and a slice of lemon in the drink to garnish and serve.

Without a doubt the best cocktail recipe there is. So easy to make and better than a Mojito in my opinion.

If you haven't tried one of these before, give it a shot, that's all I can say.

Thanks for a great recipe, this is how a Mint Julep should be made!
